CLASSICISM AND ROMANTICISM ENCOUNTER

Sonatas, divertimentos and partitas, known commonly as sonatas, estimate in Joseph Haydn's compositions over fifty oeuvres. The composer had been writing them since early years of his youth, what we can also hear in the light and cheerful character of the pieces, which as well serve full of good musical humour. Piano sonatas nr 27-39, written after 1773, emanating full atmosphere of the "Storm and Stress" period, present Haydn's musical form mastery. A great example of that could be the slow part of 37 Sonata D major, which paradoxically maintained in d minor, gains a dramatic lament aura firmly rooted in baroque music traditions.

All four Impromptus by Frederic Chopin were composed in the middle period of his artistic work between 1834 and 1843. Impromptu was an unusual genre of piano music of this epoch. From an etymological perspective, its name derives strictly from improvisation. Each of the pieces has its own unique shape, precise to every single detail. There is apparently a link keeping those four pieces together - Chopin was following one formal rule based on using figurative-evolutionary form shaping in the first and last part of the piece and cantilena in the middle part. The main essence of the Impromptu is their subtle, poetic cha-racter and luminosity of the sound. As A. Gide said (1947): "Impromptu belong to Chopin's most enchanting compositions".

the third and the last one at the same time piano sonata of the composer. It consists of five parts in which the crafty combination of romantic spirit and classical form architecture made this piece one of the best Brahms' early compositions. The main characteristics here are an extreme cohesion of form deriving from using and reprocessing the same musical themes and motifs in the whole cycle. In Allegro maestoso we will hear three contrastive themes; second part is a nocturne full of subtle emotions; Scherzo is kept in a fantastic waltz cha-racter and Intermezzo in a mood of funeral march brings back the thoughts and themes from previous parts - as it is in a form of loose rondeau.

Sonata F minor op. 5 by Johannes Brahms written in 1853 is the third and the last one at the same time piano sonata of the composer. It consists of five parts in which the crafty combination of romantic spirit and classical form architecture made this piece one of the best Brahms' early compositions. The main characteristics here are an extreme cohesion of form deriving from using and reprocessing the same musical themes and motifs in the whole cycle.
